Members of the General Faculty may hold secondary appointments in departments or schools where they have a professional interest and in which they occasionally work.
A courtesy appointment should be requested for visiting scholars who are collaborating on academics, research, or scholarship with a University of Miami Coral Gables/Rosenstiel School faculty sponsor. These appointments are unpaid and are valid for a period of up to one calendar year. Approval of the appointment will facilitate access to select University resources and can be renewed annually.
Qualified staff members of hospitals and medical research institutions with which the University has an affiliation agreement may receive appointments as Affiliated Faculty in the School of Nursing and Health Studies (SONHS).

The University of Miami sabbatical leave program is intended, insofar as University resources are available, to provide regular sabbaticals every seven years for eligible faculty to engage in research, writing, or other sustained activity of an academic nature.
With the exception of University of Miami Medical Group and RESEARCH FACULTY, eligible faculty may opt for up to one semester of parental workload relief from teaching and administrative duties. Workload relief will be granted for the semester in which a birth, adoption or placement occurs, or a parental leave expires.
Under the FMLA, faculty members are eligible for up to 12 weeks of family and medical leave during a 12-month period. The University of Miami uses a 12-month look-back period in determining entitlement for FMLA. Leave of absence may be arranged with the faculty member for purposes such as faculty exchange, advanced study, research, public service, and, in some instances, business or industrial employment.
Coral Gables/Rosenstiel School full-time 9-month faculty in the REGULAR, EDUCATOR, RESEARCH, or Lecturer track have the option of receiving their base salary payments over 12 months. The 9/12 option is available during an open enrollment period each Spring. Eligible faculty will receive a notification, and a link will be made available here during the open enrollment period. Faculty already enrolled in the plan do NOT need to take action to remain in their current plan. The open enrollment period is February 1st-March 31st

The opportunity to nominate exceptional individuals from outside of the Unviersity of Miami to serve as Distinguished Presidential Scholars or Distinguished Presidential Fellows is open to the University community. All nominated candidates will be reviewed by the Office of Faculty Affairs and, where appropriate, nominations will be shared with the relevant Deans and Chairs for consultation with their faculty prior to approaching the candidate with an invitation. Nominations can be submitted at any time point. There is no deadline.
The University of Miami Board of Trustees, through its Audit and Compliance Committee, mandated a review of Coral Gables/Rosenstiel School faculty non-base pay compensation arrangements (“special compensation”) that increase a faculty member’s overall compensation. Special compensation that increases a faculty member’s total annual compensation by more than a third of their base salary will require an approved exception request form.
This form is to be used by Regular tenure-earning faculty to request an extension of their probationary period (tenure clock).
