Welcome to the University of Miami

The onboarding steps below apply to new faculty on the Coral Gables and the Rosenstiel School campuses. If you are a new faculty member on the Medical Campus, please the Miller School of Medicine Faculty Affairs Office for more information. In addition to the onboarding steps outlined here, each school and college, and/or department, may provide additional onboarding and orientation support and events for their new faculty.

  • Cane ID & UM Email

    Once you are hired in the Workday System, you will receive an e-mail from UMIT with your CaneID and temporary password.

    • You can access your UM email using by using your CaneID and password via miami.edu
    • You will be required to set up Duo, multi-factor authentication prior to logging in
    • Please contact the IT Service Desk at 305-284-6565 or via email at help@miami.edu if you need any assistance.

  • Workday Onboarding Inbox Tasks

    Once you have cleared your background check and have been hired in the Workday System, you will receive an e-mail from UMIT with your CaneID and temporary password.

    Use these credentials to login to Workday and complete the following required onboarding tasks that are due on or before your hire date as stated in the offer letter:

    • Complete Form I-9 (Part 1)
    • Benefits Elections
    • Federal Withholding Elections
    • Enter Emergency Contact
    • Enter Home Contact Information
    • Home Contact Change

  • In-person Part 2 of I-9

    To complete Part 2 of the Form I-9 in Workday, please refer to the Lists of Acceptable I-9 Documents on Page 3 of the Form I-9. Be mindful of items in List A or List B AND C.

  • Proof of Terminal Degree

    Request and send your official transcripts, showing your terminal/highest degree conferred, via email at facultyaffairs@miami.edu or regular mail to our office address:

  • Vaccine Records

    You will be required to have the Flu Vaccine (or request an exemption) prior to the hire date as stated in the offer letter.

    You can access this process in Workday by following the Vaccine Compliance Guide

  • “I am the U” Orientation

    Full-time faculty only are to complete the “I am the U” Orientation before your first day of employment. Orientations are held online via Zoom every Monday from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

    To schedule your attendance to the “I am the U” Orientation, please contact facultyaffairs@miami.edu.

  • Parking and Cane Card

    Once your hire date has passed, you will be eligible to visit UM Parking and Transportation to set up the parking permit and pick up your UM Cane Card.

  • Departmental Orientation

    Your department’s office manager will contact you with departmental orientation details, access information, important dates, locations to classrooms, who to report to upon arrival, and any further requirements.

  • ULearn Training

    ULearn will send an automated email after the hire date as a reminder to complete the assigned training that is due within the first five days of employment:

    • FERPA
    • Emergency Management 2015
    • We Are One U: COVID-19 Safety Principles
    • Bridges: Taking Action

  • Research Onboarding

    The Office of the Vice Provost for Research and Scholarship has The Research Navigator program to provide enhanced support to streamline the onboarding of new faculty.

  • Library Essentials

    The University of Miami Libraries provide faculty with the highest quality access to collections, information services, learning support, and digital expertise in support of the University’s mission to transform lives. The Libraries welcome and incorporate advances and innovations in information technology and scholarly communication to ensure that faculty members can locate and use global information resources in all formats.

  • Free NCFDD Membership

    The National Center for Faculty Development & Diversity (NCFDD) is an independent faculty development center dedicated to supporting academics in making successful transitions throughout their careers. The University of Miami's institutional membership provides all faculty with free access to the NCFDD’s member resources. Sign-up is not a requirement of onboarding, but it is encouraged.
